A piano is member of several groups. First of all, a piano is a string instrument, because its main source of sound is the vibration of the strings. It's also a keyboard instrument (because it is played by touching the keys of the keyboard) and a percussion instrument(and idea of the composer Bela Bartok, if I'm correct; he considered the piano to be a percussive instrument because in a piano the strings are hit by hammers).
Percussion Family. The Timpani is struck by mallets ... any instrument that requires a percussive touch is a member of this family ... surprisingly enough, and a little known fact, the Piano is also a member of the Percussion Family ... a key must be struck to produce a tone!!
Pretty much any instrument which you hit, be it with a beater/stick or with your hands.
No ... it is not a member of any "family", rather it has the distinction of being called "The King of Instruments" for a good many years. The organ has orchestral voices, but cannot sound like an orchestra itself. It's sound is unique only to itself and cannot be compared with any other instrument.
No, the ukulele is a string instrument. It is a member of the lute family. Some people do 'hit' the body to get a percussion sound to keep time.
Those without strings, mainly woodwinds, brass and percussion. The piano is in reality a member of the percussion family primarily because of the manner in which is required to produce sound, but has been "accepted" as being part of the string family in many circles.
A "trio" ... consists of string instruments plus a piano. The piano is a member of the percussion family.
The tympani, kettle drum, and the timps are other names for the timpani.
percussion, and strings
Yes. By definition, a percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when it or any part of if is hit, plucked or striked, which sets the object into vibration. Since the clavichord's sound is produced by the strike of strings by a metal piece at the end of the keys, it fits the definition nicely.
Drums are a member of the percussion family.
