What was the Education like in the New England Colonies?

Through out the 17th and 18th centuries the family was the primary institution for the education of children. Families in the colonies tended to be nuclear and patriarchal in organization. Fathers were responsible for the education of their children, apprentices, and indentured servants living within their households. Formal schools first appeared in the colonies in 1630 and in 1635 the Boston Latin school was established. It was the first town supported school and it established a pattern of local control oer the educational system. This was further strengthened by the passage of the Massachusetts old Deluder Satan Act requiring every town of at least 50 households to hire a teacher of reading and writing. A town of 100 plus was required to establish and operate grammar schools. The intent of the new laws was to ensure schools advanced literacy so all citizens could "Possess knowledge of the scriptures." The legislation affirmed the colonists' concerns to preserve learning within their wilderness communities. The initial infrastructure of American education was in place before the American Revolution and the establishment of the new nation had an impact on the purpose and content of education. The welfare of the new Republic depended on the loyalty, vision, and skill of its citizen It was considered important the teaching of republican virtues and this became the central goal of education in the new government. George Washington in his Circular to the states identified 4 requisites to the continued independence of the United States. He stated Among these was, Prevalence of that pacific and friendly disposition among the people of the United States which will induce them to forget their local prejudices and polices, to make those mutual concessions which are requisite to the general prosperity, and in some instances to sacrifice their individual advantages to the interest of the community. There was one basic tenet and that was to keep a republican form of government could not survive without an educated citizenry. The primary reason for education was to enable a citizen to properly discharge his responsibilities as a member of a free society.
