According the the American Museum of Natural History, "They are protected by their coloration, dark backs, and light undersides. This way, they are hard to spot from above, because they blend into the dark sea floor; from below, creatures looking up see the bright light from above, and so it is hard to spot a pale abdomen. This adaptation helps predators stay hidden from prey and prey stay hidden from predators."

A penguins camouflage is designed mostly for when they are swimming, as this is when their biggest predator, seals, are most likely to attack them. When a penguin is swimming, from above the black, back side of the penguin can be seen. This does not contrast greatly with the sea when viewed from above, and as such provides camouflage here. Alternatively, when viewed form below the white belly of the penguin does not hugely contrast against the bright sky, and provides coverage for the penguin when viewed form below by seals or killer whales.
