Yes, there were luxury cars in the hold of the Titanic when she sank.
Actually only one, a red Renault CB Coupe deVille bought in Europe by millionaire William Carter. It was stored in the forward hold, possibly in a crate, and reports of it's current fate vary. Some say that it would have been crushed as the contents of the hold fell forward when the ship dipped diagonally down, other opinions are that if the car was crated, the tough wooden box would have protected it and that it may well still be in there, upright and awaiting discovery. However, even if it remains in it's crate, a Century of exposure to seawater would have taken it's toll on the vehicle- it's buried deep somewhere in the forward hold, but what condition it's in now is anybody's guess.

∙ 12y agoThey were evidently luxury automobiles. The cars were mainly European and more specifically of French lineage; because in those days, European cars were very popular among the wealthy few in America. In the America of 1912, it was "chic and de bon genre" to be seen in a big Delauney-Belleville or a Mercedes Coupe Chauffeur. It is quite possible that there were American cars on the ship because the American passengers were on their way back to New York, having used a different ship to come to Europe. They had most probably taken their own car instead of using the plebeian-fit public trains of the old continent.

∙ 6y agoFrom Titanic's ships manifest and the insurance claim from William Carter it was extrapolated that there was an automobile on Titanic. It was a $5,000 Twin Renault type CB Coupe de Ville. It's in a cargo hold in the forward section of the ship but it may not even be assembled, it could very well only be the parts.

∙ 6y agoThere is/was an automobile on Titanic but it has never been found. It's in a cargo hold near the fore of the wreck. It's a Twin Renault-type CB Coupe de Ville. However it is not determined that the car has actually been assembled. It could very well be in parts - to be put together in the US.
