US Senator Huey P. Long, nicknamed "the Kingfish", was the most controversial American politician of his time. The influential populist died in the early morning of September 10,1935 at an age of 42 as a result of inner bleeding after he had been struck by gun shots in the Capitol of Louisiana in the evening of September 8. The question if these shots were fire by his alleged assassin, Dr. Carl Weiss, or by some of his body guards trying to shoot Weiss, has never been solved.

Huey Long was buried in a luxurious double walled metal casket provided by the New Orleans Manufacturing Company - a hermetically sealed model of such a high price that it had never before been sold in the whole South. The outer casket was a round corner design made of extra heavy solid bronze. It contained an inner casket made of solid copper lined with velvet and satin. The casket had a triple lid: the outer one was undivided and made of bronze; it was temporarily removed while Long's was lying in state in the State Capitol; the middle lid was split in two parts and made of copper, the head panel of which was opened up while ten thousands of mourners passed by; the innermost lid was a full length plate glass panel protecting the embalmed remains. The retail price of the casket was $ 5,000 - at that time the value of two Cadillacs.

The "Kingfish" was buried in front of "his" new State Capitol of Louisiana in Baton Rouge.
