They were fed on a diet of bread and onions given only enough to keep them alive. They were also naked too low in status to be given clothes. In most cases, slaves are people who earn no income who have to do very hard jobs and be another persons "robot" for nothing. It was this sort of "free" labour which made projects like building the pyramids and other notions of grandeur possible.
