Peritas was a Molossus, the extinct ancestors of Mastiffs. There seems to be some debate about the meaning and it shouldn't be (If you are a Macedonian boy). Herakles Peritas was "the Marauder" who looked out for young Macedonian males going through the rites of passage to manhood. Alexander acquired Peritas as a puppy at about age 11 just before those rites. The name means "Marauder" from the word for "assault" and lies behind the English word "Pirate."
