There are all kinds of service dogs! From seeing-eye dogs, to therapy dogs, even to hearing dogs!Corgis are often used as hearing dogs.

Guide dogs are usually golden retrievers and labradors, though German shepherds are also used.

Therapy dogs (such as seizure alert dogs, and wheelchair assistance dogs, etc.) range from toy poodles to St. Bernards.

In the "official" police/army/FBI way, all kinds of dogs are used for sniffing out things from cocaine to people buried in rubble. I know that bloodhounds are used for this, as are beagles and other scent hounds, while German shepherds and belgian shepherds are very common for defense breeds.
