Electrical energy in the battery (actually stored as chemical energy within the battery) is converted to mechanical energy in the starter motor.

As the starter motor turns the engine, and the electrical energy supplied to the spark plugs ignites the fuel (which contains stored chemical energy), the explosion of the air-fuel mixture pushes the piston down, converting pressure energy and thermal energy into kinetic energy.
