Once you decide, I suggest you use a manufactured wood (plywood, MDF, particleboard), these are more stable and prone to less movement, [you can always veneer for a finished decorative look]. For the thickness of wood, you can use 1/2", but, 3/4" would be much easier to work with, (joints, glue areas, and holding power of any fasteners you use, etc.
