From a scientific standpoint, we've evolved to find foods which are beneficial to us as "tasty", and (for the most part) foods which are bad for us as "disgusting". For example, natural items which are high in sugar content tend to be very beneficial to humans (fruits of all kinds, in particular). So, humans have evolved to find sugar "tasty", so we prefer foods with sugar in them over ones which have no (or less) sugar, as, historically, the odds that a high-sugar item was beneficial were much better than the odds that a low-sugar one was beneficial.

Because sugar appeals to our taste buds, and your taste buds are designed to respond to foods that cause you to store a lot of fat like ice cream. Foods loaded with sugar and fat help people to get through times of famine. The Average American does not go through times of famine as our ancestors did. This is unfortunately why the best tasting foods tend to make us the fattest.
Subsidies in the US sugar market typically lead to lower production costs for sugar producers, which can result in increased supply. This increased supply may keep domestic sugar prices below what they would be in a free market, benefiting consumers in the short term. However, these subsidies can also distort competition, leading to higher prices for sugar in the long run, as they protect domestic producers from foreign competition. Additionally, the subsidies may lead to overproduction and inefficient resource allocation in the agricultural sector.
