The Owner's Manual should specify the minimum octane requirements. Most cars run perfectly well on 87 octane, and there really is little to no benefit in using a higher grade than that called for by the manufacturer. Certain cars with "high performance" engines may require higher octane fuel to run properly, but if so this will be explicitly spelled out in the Owner's Manual.
