The .45-70, also known as .45-70 Government, was developed at the U.S. Army's Springfield Armory for use in the Springfield Model 1873. As an historical aside, it's name was derived from the caliber of the bullet , in this case 45 caliber propelled by 70 grains of black powder. However, modern cartridges in this caliber use smokeless powder.
As for what you can shoot with this caliber, the short answer is anything you want, provided the range is relatively short. The large caliber bullet is going to lose velocity quickly. Alaskan guides often chose this caliber in easy to carry lever action guns for quick medicine against angry Alaska brown bears should such be encountered in the bush. If it will handle those, you can be sure it will any handle lesser critters you might have in mind.
