• Europeans were NOT the first people here; indigenous people were here long before Whites.
• America was originally a colony under British control.
• We had 13 original colonies.
• Citizens decided to revolt against unfair taxation and governance through the American Revolutionary War.
• The Federalist Papers described what the country's government could be.
• The Declaration of Independence did exactly that - declared we would be independent.
• We are a Republic.
• The United States Constitution set out how The United States of America would govern itself.
• The Amendments to The United States Constitution were needed to clarify points in The Constitution and to add sections as our country developed.
• The Bill of Rights is a unique document that outlines citizen's rights and responsibilities under The United States Constitution.
• The United States Constitution lays out a 3-branch government, so no one branch has all the power.
• Our capital is Washington, D.C. Every State has a capital, too.
• We are led by the US President in the Executive Branch.
• We are represented through the Legislative Branch, which also makes our laws.
• Citizens and our Constitution are protected under the Judicial Branch.
• The US Supreme Court is the highest Court of the land. The court system branches downward through smaller courts down to the local level.

• Geologically, the middle of the USA once was a big ocean. The Appalachian Mountains folded from the EAST and once included volcanoes. The Rocky Mountains folded from lands WEST of them. Other than on Hawaii islands, we only have one active volcano in the lower 48 states; it is Mount Saint Helen in Washington State. Sediments from the The Appalachian Mountains have been found in rivers in The Rocky Mountains. We also have 5 Great Lakes in the north and one makes a shared border with Canada.
• Weather-wise, the US has many regions with different weather in each. The North and North-west experiences all 4 seasons with changes in weather. The US has "Tornado Alley" in the Midwest. Near the Great Lakes we have "Lake Effect snowfall".
• Citizens can travel freely anywhere within the USA. We do not have border authorities at State boundaries.
• Every State has State Police.
• Counties have a Sheriff.
• Cities and towns have Local police departments.
