Thomas Paine published a pamphlet about independence from Great Britain called Common Sense. It was an important step into helping colonies think about rebellion in the few months before the Declaration of Independence was written on July 4, 1776.

My guess is because Thomas Paine was essentially an atheist and an outspoken critic of Christianity. He wasn't well liked and I think only nine or so people attended his funeral.
