Roosevelt suffered (and I normally don't use that word) from bouts of Asthma and cholera morbus (his words) his entire life.
Upon his graduation at age 22, Theodore was told by an examining doctor that his heart was sufficiently weak that he should abandon all strenuous activity, as such effort might kill him. Theodore basically decided that he would rather die than give up "the strenuous life." He never wrote about this condition or mentioned it to anyone, including his wife. However, Harvard records confirm his heart condition.
