Very little. Most ships in the Ancient world followed Coastlines for trade and didn't venture into open waters. The Vikings and Chinese were early open water sailors, but this technology took time to reach Europe. With the crusaders coming home knowledge came with them and by the 1400's the moveable sail had been invented, keels were added, and the astrolabe had been invented. The early sailors thought there were sea monsters and that there were islands made of magnets that could pull nails out,of ships.

What kind of skills do you need to have to be an astronaut?

They would need to have a good knowledge of various forms of science. Different astronauts may specialise in certain areas. Their specialities may then determine some of the work that they will eventually do. A knowledge of astronomy and space would be important. Some will have skills in other things, like engineering or mechanics. Many astronauts have worked as pilots. Flying a spacecraft is very different than flying a plane, but there are a lot of skills and knowledge from flying a plane that can be used in flying a spacecraft, like the actual flight controls.

What did Apollo program need to run its guidance systems?

A worldwide network of satellite dishes connected to a building full of computers. The guidance was done from earth and verified by the crew using the same kind of sextants that had been used for thousands of years by sailors navigating the world's oceans. The astronaut took a reading on 3 or 4 different stars and punched their coordinates into a verty small computer which told them where they were in space.
