If it has been magnetized by another magnet, then it is just a temporary magnet, but if it uses an electric current, then it is an electro-magnet.
They are kind of like a force around each other. They are negative and positive pulls. As you hold a paper clip to a magnet its an invisible field around the paperclip and the magnet. The paper clip also has magnet attracted metal so it will stick.

THey are stamped sheet metal and I would say they are a mild steel. Check it out with a Magnet; if the magnet sticks then it is definitely steel. If it doesn't then that does not stick that it could be an alloy with some iron in it.
An electromagnet, or any magnet, only attracts certain metals like iron. (Steel is a kind of iron.) If you want to remove, for example, aluminum splinters, you must use another process because aluminum is not attracted to a magnet.
