Pioneers had to be creative in gaining their foods, trying different meats and cooking methods. The prepared and stored fresh meats by cutting the meat into chunks and salting it heavily to preserve it. The meat then had to be scrubbed before cooking to remove the salt.
Types of meat the pioneers ate:
pioneering woman used open fires to cook most of their food and also to make butter [ i think ] they pounded and pushed the milk down until it was soft and hard and but not stale.
I'm pretty sure they cooked their food with fire when they discovered it without fire they would be eating just plants such as corn, and many more
