All kinds of mines are to be found in Ontario, from small family operations producing gem amethyst in the Thunder Bay region, to immense operations producing copper, gold and diamonds, to enormous open pit mines producing limestone, granite, marble, and many other useful rocks. Mining is one of the industrial backbones of the province, and has provided good jobs and enormous tax revenues for over a century.
