You naturally want something that is upbeat and has a fairly fast rhythm. Whenever I workout, I listen to mostly Rock Music, which I think works very well.
It keeps a tempo and you unknowingly follow it, for novice runners, I recommend a little hip-hop, but not dubstep or anything like that until you are experienced and can keep that kind of pace.
