a map if it has a compass rose on it
The usefulness of stars is only the uses we have found for them. Stars are useful in navigation, done the old fashioned way with a sextant and compass.
From what I know, there are three types of compasses. There is the original chines compass which is also known as the magnetic compass. there is also another compass called the gyrocompass. there's another one known as the astrocompass, and one also known as the box compass. ++++ It's a bit simpler than that. Magnetic compass, gyrocompass (which uses the inertia of a spinning flywheel) and electronic versions based on satellite navigation systems. The heading photo shows two magnetic compasses typical of those used by walkers & climbers.
what are the uses of angles in navigation
Courstal navigation is when one uses the coast to guide navigation while driving.
What property it uses depends on the type of compass. A magnetic compass uses magnetism. Some other compasses (which are more accurate) use the rotation of Earth itself.

There are compass systems using MEMS. MEMS means micro electromechanical systems. The MEMS compass system uses a vibrating structure gyroscope to operate. Most MEMS inertial navigation systems have integrated GPS. The very sophisticated ones are independent to prevent jamming, they use computers and an accelerometer as well as a MEMS gyroscope to operate.
Sonar navigation uses sound waves; radar navigation uses electromagnetic waves (usually radio eaves).
There are several different types of compass:magnetic compass, uses a light weight bar magnet on a pivotgyroscopic compass, uses a gyroscope (either mechanical or LASER ring)drawing compass, used to assist in drawing circles for drafting or artetc.
Magnetic North.
It uses a magnetic needle to point to the earth's magnetic North Pole. The only other type of compass used is a gyro-compass. This uses a wheel which rotates parallel with the earth's rotation.
