It depens on the condition & km's on the engine. It the engine is in good nick ie: doesn't blow smoke or no oil consumption probs then a good quality 15w40 oil would do fine (valvoline engine armour etc).
If the motor is high mileage ie 200,000kms+ a semi-synthetic 15w50 (shell high mileage) or a quality 20w50 mineral oil will be fine.
Change the oil & filter every 5,000kms or 3 months.
You can check the automatic gearbox oil on a 1993 Ford Laser 1.5 using the oil stick.
