It will vary car to car. The best is to check the owners manual, It will usually give a recommended oil for a given heat range.
Generally that will remain the best oil for the engine over its lifespan. If the engine is getting worn out (and for most modern engines 100K is nowhere near that point) going up a weight or two can *possibly* help extend the life of a worn engine. However it will reduce efficiency (resulting in less power & mpg).

I recommend a high mileage oil such as Pennzoil High Mileage in the weight the manufacture of the vehicle recommends.
With that kind of mileage I would go ahead and do an engine overhaul or swap. Unless the body and running gear have been used and abused it should have another 100K left in it.
