Catholic AnswerIgnatius of Loyola, whose feast is today (July 31st), lived in the sixteenth century, he was a soldier and was wounded pretty badly when he was about thirty-one, I believe. As he was laid up in bed for a time, he asked for some books on Knights, errantry, and such. All that they had were a Lives of Christ, and Lives of the Saints. St. Ignatius started reading these two books. As time went on, he was still thinking about his knightly deeds of gallantry, but he discovered that when he stopped thinking about them, he was left morose. When he thought about Our Blessed Lord and His Saints, when he stopped thinking about them, he was still unexpectedly joyous. As he started to observe this phenomenon and thought about it, he realized that Our Blessed Lord, Jesus Christ, was leading him towards the lives of the saints, so he decided to turn his back on the world and follow Our Blessed Lord. He initially started out on a mission to the Holy Land, but war broke out, and he went to Rome with some companions instead. There they got permission from the Pope to start the Society of Jesus. As time went on, their relationship became very close as Ignatius rose higher and higher in Mystical Contemplation and Prayer. Our Blessed Lord and St. Ignatius had a very close, working relationship.
