There are three main kinds of rocks that are named after the different ways that they form. The kind of rock that forms when molten rock cools is called igneous rock. Basalt and obsidian are some types of igneous rock. The other two kinds of rocks are called metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Metamorphic rock forms beneath the earth's surface as a result of intense heat and pressure changes. Sedimentary rock forms from particles of material, literally called sediment, consisting of pebbles, shells, sand, and other fragments. The sediment hardens into rock over a period of time as the layers accumulate.
If a metamorphic rock melts, then cools, it will form an igneous rock.

Igneous Rocks are formed. Obsidian is a volcanic glass, go to wikepidiea and search "list of rocks" and it will come up with all the different igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks and what they are.

Sedimentary rocks: Rock formed when chemical reactions cement sediments (small, solid fragments of rocks and other materials) together, hardening them. Igneous rocks: Rock that forms from molten rock (hot magma thats cools and hardens). Metamorphic rocks: Igneous/sedimentary rock that has been changed into a new kind of rock as a result of great pressure and temperature.
Sedimentary rocks are formed when other rocks (igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary) are weathered and eroded and their sediments are compacted and cemented together. Metamorphic rocks can be formed when heat and pressure is applied to any type of existing rock. Igneous rocks are formed when magma cools. The magma can be made up of melted rocks of any kind (sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic). The cycle repeats itself all the time and all of the rocks can come from any other kind of rock.
