It sure seems like it should be "meteorologists", but it's not; they study weather.

Meteors are generally studied by astronomers, or (if they land, becoming meteorites) by geologists. There are also a lot of cross-disciplinary areas in science, so a particular researcher interested in meteors might think of himself primarily as belonging to one of those, such as for example a geochemist, while another one doing more or less exactly the same type of studies might regard himself as a cosmologist.
