In my experience....being in the swamps and woods most of the year at work...if you're in the southern U.S., it's likely a moccasin (cottonmouth). Their nests usually have a strong urine/decaying smell. Watch out for them, they'll actually come after you, and if you get bit, even though you go to the doctor and they jab that needle in for the IV and anti-venom, they inbreed so bad that the anti-venom may or may not be real effective.
