With speakers the saying "you get what you pay for" is usually true.
Your going to have to do your homework and look online and read the reviews of the speakers in your price range or listen to a friend or family members speakers to see for yourself.
Be aware, speakers are a hard product to buy as different people have a different version of what they like. Just read the reviews and take them with a "grain of salt", meaning get an average of what everyone says they like or dislike and go from there.
Sony offers a avriety of surround sound products. They are car speakers, television speakers and home entertainment speakers as well. There are wireless speakers and different lenghts when it comes to hardwired speakers.
Bookshelf or Satellite speakers are pretty standard for surround sound but they may require wall mounting or specific placement.
Purchase a set of Sony, or Panasonic 3way speakers in the correct size and they will sound great. There are other more expensive speakers that also sound great, it just depends on how much you want to spend.

Rather than using a USB sound card which can be awkward, I suggest that you go to Windows Help to try and sort out the problem as it is usually a software issue that is causing the distorted sound.

This really depends on what kind of speaker quality you want to pay for. If you just use the speakers once in awhile then you are ok with going with the factory speakers. If you watch movies however you can't get much better than sound quality offered by Bose speakers.
