There are different tiger species that depend on different animals. I'll list the deer for the most common tiger subspecies: the Bengal (or Indian) tiger. BENGAL---A tiger usually hunts on sambar, an Indian deer which is pretty common where tigers live. They also may eat chital or chevrotain. Usually they eat a species of deer. If that's un-available, they may also eat fish, small mammals, small birds, usually anything edible to them (for us, this is probably highly un-edible)
Also, tigers are known for man-eating. THAT IS NOT FOR FOOD. Usually it's for protection, from the humans. They think the humans are going to kill the tiger, the humans think the opposite. This is why there's tension between animals.
Another thing, tigers eating their cubs is true, but also for protection. Mothers may do it to stop them from suffering (we do it to our pets), fathers for protection from cubs taking over the territory.
Tigers survive the way every animal survives. They rely on other animals to feed off of. That is how nature is. It's called the food web.
Baby tigers survive by staying with their mother. The mother tiger will feed and watch over her young for a few months.
For the same reason YOU feed - to get energy in order to survive !
