i just found one of these in my yard in California and when i googled the description came across your question.
i am pretty sure this is what you saw as well. if it was they are actually pretty harmless even though they are absolutely horrific looking!!!!
the picture above will most likely give me nightmares.
thanks to global warming it sounds like they are migrating from the tropics!
Not sure what kind it is, but I just saw one in my house in western Wisconsin. Sure would like to know if it is dangerous or not.
Black widdows are black with red spots and dangerously poisonous, so if it is, stay away. If it's not, it could be a member of that spider family.

Nice Spider That JumpsThis is probably a jumping spider-- depending on what region of the country (or world) that you live in. It is most common in the southeastern United States. Matalin____________Jumping Spiders is the nickname for an entire family of spiders (the Salticidae) and they occur all over the entire country and world. In North America alone, there are almost 400 species. The species can vary by location, but every location has jumping spiders. For your question, check into the genus Phidippus(maybe google that name and look through images). -Mandy

Some say that the black widow spider is the deadliest spider in Michigan, close but but not the deadliest. THE deadliest spider in Michigan is the brown recluse in its mature form. Although occationally deadly a small number of bites can cause necroses which is simply the disolving and if not treated quickly can cause serios injury and for some cases death more to those who are young particularly under 10. Dont worry about not feeling the bite while sleeping, within seconds you will feel imense pain and in minutes intense and frustating breathing. Here is a bite from one

The cross spider has white crosses on his abdomen. Another North American spider with white on his belly is a parson spider who has a white stripe down his abdomen.
This is the Herpyllus Ecclesiasticus, more commonly known as the Parsons spider. This spider gets its name because the white stripe on the abdomen resembles an 18th Century parson's cravat.
a red back looks almost the same. But doesnt have an hourglass shape. It has a red stripe on top of its abdomen.

black widow
A black spider that has a red stripe on the back is possibly a red spotted ant mimic spider. They walk on six legs instead of eight and can be found in Arizona.
This is probably a Red-Backed Jumping Spider. The male has a black body with a bright red abdomen. The female is the same, but the red abdomen has a black stripe. They're found all over the United States. If you want pictures of them, you can find them online at http://kaweahoaks.com/html/spi_phidippus_johnsoni.html.
