It was a spiked helmet used by the Prussian and later German armies. It was first used in the 19th century and its use in the German army stopped after WW1.

Commonly called "field works" before World War I, these types of defenses are older than armies. The first known use of trench warfare was as a defensive measure by the Romans when armies were on the move. Trench warfare was effectively used during the Civil War, most notably during the sieges of Petersburg and Vicksburg.

The three main formations used in Napoleonic Warfare were the Line Formation used when approaching the enemy in which most armies would fight, the Column Formation used when armies were marching and usually not used in battle as only the first few ranks of men could fire (although Napoleon preferred his armies to fight in this formation), and the square formation which was when an infantry company would form into a giant hollow square in which to ward off enemy cavalry attacks.

Principally the Imperial German Navy and the Royal Navy - both enormous forces at the time. Submarines and anti-submarine warfare were still in their infancy in WW1, but it was a German submarine that torpedoed the liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland.
