There was a plethora of smooth bore muskets (the British Brown Bess) and rifled flintlock weapons employed by the British, while comparatively, the Americans initially had scant weapons due to the British Gun Control, via embargoes and taxation. American firearms had to be constructed domestically or smuggled in. If memory serves me, a majority of the American firearms were of French and German origin. The German Jaeger (hunter) rifles were copied, refined domestically and later called Kentucky Long Rifles. These were used to great effect by the Colonists at sniping British Officers from afar. Remember, those who control the guns, control the people!
