Rain, wind and low barometric pressure cause thunderstorms and high winds (of at least 74 miles an hour, the minimum force of hurricane winds). Heavy rains can cause flooding and uproot trees; winds can cause damage to property and bring down power lines, disrupting electricity. Water pipes and mains can break, making water undrinkable. The most dangerous aspect of a hurricane is storm surge. This is an abnormal rise in the ocean level over the dune line and beyond. It is the deadliest aspect of a hurricane because many people underestimate its severity. A storm surge rises up like a wave and sweeps over the shore. When it recedes, it may have leveled everything in its path.
