In America, for many decades, there were Africans who used to work as slaves, until they were emancipated by President Abraham Lincoln. But Africa is not just made up of former slaves. It is a large continent, and contains many countries. Some Africans today live in poor countries where most people are illiterate. Those who work tend to be farmers or herdsmen or they make goods to sell. But in other countries, there is wealth and success, and Africans work in modern companies as business executives, or in colleges as professors, or they are computer programmers, lawyers, and doctors. Some of the more modern countries provide many professional opportunities for women, while in the poorer countries, few women work outside the home. In other words, there is really not one answer: it depends on which country in Africa you are asking about.
