People on the First Fleet came from all walks of life. Most of them were convicts, made up of thieves, pick-pockets, forgers, petty criminals and ordinary people just struggling to survive and driven to steal food.
The remainder of people were ships' crewmen; officers (including Governor Phillip) and marines, some of whom had wives and children; there was also one minister.
Besides the convicts, only the officers, marines and some marines' wives and children came with the First Fleet. There were no free settlers or emigrants from England.
The people on the First Fleet were from England and Ireland.
