Ankylosaurus was very low to the ground, and unlike Triceratops and Edmontosaurus, other herbivores that lived at the same time and place, Ankylosaurus couldn't chew. Thus, they ate tender plants that grew close to the ground. Ankylosaurus was only able to reach plants that grew 4 feet above the ground or less.

Ankylosaurus could not reach vegetation much above 4 feet high. Unlike hadrosaurs and ceratopsians, Ankylosaurus couldn't chew, so it probably ate relatively tender, easy to digest plants. Plants that lived in the same time and place as Ankylosaurus include conifers, cycads, ferns, horsetails, ginkgoes, and early flowering plants like palms and primitive grasses.

How did ankylosaurus get its food?

Ankylosaurus ate low growing plants in its natural habitat. It would have known what was and wasn't edible either instinctively or by learning from its parents (if they were raised by their parents, which is unknown). If there were no edible plants in sight, the Ankylosaurus would travel until it found them.
