Judah

Answer:

In the beginning, David reigned over Judah first... and Saul reigned over Israel. But in the course of time, David reigned over both houses, Judah and Israel.

"David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over ALL ISRAEL AND JUDAH." (II Sam.5:4-5)

AnswerAccording to biblical tradition, David ruled a United Monarchy of Israel, from his capital in Jerusalem.

However, Israel Finkelstein says that more than 50 per cent of scholars do not believe that there was really a United Monarchy ruled over by David. He says that the northern kingdom, Israel, and Judah were always separate, with their own customs, pottery and dialects of the Hebrew language. David, if he really existed, was probably a tribal chief in the southern enclave of Judah.
