He won the competition to design Australia's national capital, whereby he and his wife moved to Australia, where Griffin was appointed as the Federal Capital Director of Design and Construction. To commemorate Burley Griffin's role in the design of the national capital, the artificial lake formed by damming the Molonglo River was named after him.
