It comes from Greek.

Also, the Portuguese language uses mil for thousand which makes complete sense when you think that a milimetre is a thousandth of a metre and mililitre as a thousandth of a litre. So, mil equals 1000 and milhao means a million. So my question is where did the word thousand come from. Mil makes more sense as we already use it for thousands of things or substances.
