According to the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language (Fourth Edition, 2000), 'piccolo' is of, relating to, or being a musical instrument considerably smaller than the usual size: a piccolo Trumpet; a piccolo concertina. The etymology of the word 'piccolo' is explained as being borrowed from Italian (meaning small), although some French origins do come up. This is taken direct from an etymology dictionary: 1856, from Fr. piccolo, from It. flauto piccolo "small Flute," from piccolo "small," perhaps a children's made-up word or from picca "point," or perhaps from V.L. root *pikk- "little," related to *piccare "to pierce"
