Hardwoods grow from the middle southern portion of the southern hemisphere to the middle northern portion of the northern hemisphere. Generally speaking, any tree with leaves produces hardwood (ash, oak, balsa), opposed to needle bearing trees that produce softwoods (i.e. pine, for, cedar).
