Depending on your opinion of what is a language, there are between 1 and 10 languages on Sumba.
According to a dissertation by Anak Agung Putu Putra there is only one language spoken by the original population of Sumba.
A more reasonable opinion is that there are 4 languages: Eastern-central Sumbanese linkage (includes Eastern Sumbanese, Mamboru, Anakalang, Wanukaka, Pondok and Baliledo), Lamboya, Weyewa (includes Weyewa proper, Loura, Tana Righu, Ve Luri, Wai Bangga and Loliina) and Kodi (includes Kodi proper and Gaura).
I think that it is possible that we can speak of ten languages: Eastern Sumbanese, Mamboru, Anakalang, Wanukaka, Pondok, Baliledo, Laboya, Weyewa, Kodi and Gaura.
According to Robert Blust the traditional Bima-Sumba group of languages is not valid. Only a relation with Sawu and Dhao can be proved.
