Jean Lamarck's theory of evolution is known as zoological philosophy or the inheritance of acquired characteristics, and stated that changes to an organisms phenotype (basically what it looks like) will cause changes to it's genotype (DNA). This has been disproved of by modern scientists, with natural selection as the main theory.

However, modern research in genetics has shown that some experiences can cause chemical changes in the body which, in turn, can affect the genes so that the offspring is affected. So, to a small extent Lamarc had it right.

Acoording to Lamarck, a parent that has tattoos would pass on the tattoos to the offspring. Loss of limb, injuries, cosmetic surgery or anything that changed in the parents would manifest in the offspring. This is not the case. Acquired characteristics are not passed on to offspring unless they change the gene sequence of the sex cells. Parents do not give physical characteristics to offspring, but do give the coding for those characteristics. The gene passes on the trait.

if I were to inherit traits based on Lamarcks explanation of evolution were correct we wouldn't be the people we are now. Lamarcks´ explanation was that acquired characteristics were genetically passed to the offspring so if that were so, the human brains would be much more developed, more knowledge, and bigger parts of the body. This question is also tricky since a human would turn out to be a giant by the time they got to the 100th offspring
Because acquired characteristics are not programmed in the DNA; only characterisitics which are genetically programmed are passed on and inherited.
