They didn't drop it during Pearl Harbor,
The attack on Peal Harbour happened in 1941, The bomb was dropped twice in 1945
The Japanese Navy launched airplanes that attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in a surprise raid on the morning of December 7, 1941. That attack brought the United States into World War II. The USA did not use nuclear weapons (an atomic bomb) at Pearl Harbor, or anywhere else, until 1945, the year the war ended. The Japanese did not have nuclear weapons.
The USA and its allies fought Japan in the Pacific, both on land and at sea. The United States military fought the entire war to capture islands and places of military importance to Japan and to end the war. Many tens of thousands of American and Japanese soldiers, sailors, and Marines were killed.
The USA moved closer and closer to Japan's shore, and by 1945 the USA had fought its way to within a short distance from mainland Japan, close enough to launch an invasion of soldiers into Japan. Military planners in the USA believed that as many as one million American military personnel might be killed by the Japanese in such an invasion, and that millions of Japanese would also be killed.
The atomic bomb was a brand new weapon in the summer of 1945, and it had never been used before, by any country. Only the USA had an atomic bomb at that time. US President Harry Truman believed that if the USA dropped one or more atomic bombs on Japan, then Japan would surrender to prevent further damage to Japan and to its people. President Truman also believed that fewer people would die from the bomb than would be killed on both sides if the USA invaded Japan.
In July, 1945, the USA and its allies demanded that the Japanese surrender. The Japanese Emperor Hirohito refused to surrender. Because Japan refused to surrender, President Truman ordered that an atomic bomb be dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. That bomb killed an estimated 70,000 to 80,000 people, and wounded that many more. Yet, Japan still refused to surrender. President Truman then ordered a second attack, to drop another atomic bomb on a different Japanese city.
On August 9, 1945, the USA dropped a second, more powerful atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan. The blast at Nagasaki created a temperature of 7,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and winds of 624 miles per hour, on the ground. 40,000 to 75,000 people were estimated to have been killed by that bomb. A few days later, Emperor Hirohito ordered Japan's surrender.
The use of the atomic bombs has been debated since the first bombs were used. The Americans believed that the atomic bombs actually saved lives in the long run by making an invasion of Japan unnecessary. Some scholars disagree, stating the Soviet Union's surprise attack with 1.6 million troops upon the Japanese troops occupying eastern Asia, the collapse of Nazi Germany, and the naval blockade of Japan, would have all combined to cause Japan's surrender even if no atomic bomb had been used.
All the world recognized the vast destructive power of nuclear bombs, and no nuclear bombs have been used by any nation since 1945.
