The term boomtown was used to describe a town that grew quickly around gold-minning areas.
gold mining areas
One that grew up quickly around gold-mining areas.
Boon towns had different causes. Some were transportation centers, cross roads, railroad heads and steamboat ports. Some were mineral based gold, silver and copper strikes. If a town could become a county seat or even better a territorial or state capital this would bring business into the area.
A boom town is a community that grows quickly, both in population and economy. The western towns in the American Old West that were called boom towns were ones that grew quickly due to the discovery of gold in the area. Later, boom towns grew because oil was discovered in the area.
