What lessons can be learned from the baptism of Jesus?

The gospels tell us that John the Baptist baptised for the remission of sins, but we are also told that Jesus was untouched by sin. Fortunately, the first-century Jewish historian, Josephus says that John was not baptising for the forgiveness of sins, but for the purification of the body. He says John: "was a good man, and commanded the Jews to exercise virtue, both as to righteousness towards one another, and piety towards God, and so to come to baptism; for that the washing would be acceptable to him, if they made use of it, not in order to the putting away [or the remission] of some sins, but for the purification of the body; supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness."
As can be seen, Josephus quite explicitly differs from the gospel account on the purpose of baptism, but gives us some insights into similarities between the teachings of John and those of Jesus.

The story of the baptism of Jesus first appeared in Mark's Gospel, where it was contrasted through a parallel structure* with the Transfiguration of Jesus:

First, we learn from John about the coming of Jesus (event A, Mark 1:1-8), one greater than he. At the baptism, God announces that Jesus is his beloved son (event C, confirmed by event C'). Through these events and the forty days in the wilderness, a reference to Elijah in the wilderness ministered by an angel and in the wilderness forty days (1 Kings 19:5-7) and to Moses fasting for forty days when he received the Ten Commandments, the author was also teaching that Jesus was the second Elijah and also the second Moses.

* A parallel structure is a literary sequence in which an opening set of events is contrasted with another, parallel set of events that mirror the first.
