This is an example of personification, where the cold is given human-like qualities of reluctance. It helps create a vivid image of the changing weather and sets a mood for the scene.
Personifiction
Personifiction
It uses personification twice, between Earth, the hills, and the Army soldiers all "stretched out", and the cold, the fog, and the men "stretched out" on the hills "resting". The second (the cold, the fog, stretched out, "resting") brings an image of death, of being "stretched out resting" or "laid out" for a funeral viewing, even if at the time no one was dead yet in the story. Altogether, it brings a feeling of foreboding, of an unfolding of events that cannot be stopped, and that is beyond any one person's power to control the outcome.

Suspense
I believe that would be a metaphor describing a revealed secret.
A sequence of words beginning with the same letter as "furrow followed free" is called alliteration.
Themes in literary works can be revealed through the characters, setting, plot, and symbols used in the text. Common themes include love, power, identity, justice, and morality. Authors often use these elements to explore deeper truths about human nature and society.
In literary terms, a "round" character is one whose personality is developed, enabling it to play a part in the story. This is opposed to "flat" characters who serve only a limited purpose and about whom little is revealed.
Most Native Americans are surmised to have come from Asia. They used a land bridge that stretched from Siberia to Alaska. this land bridge was revealed during the ice age but, due to the melting of the ice, was covered in water and is now under the Bering Strait.
An implicit theme is a theme in a literary work that is not directly stated but is revealed gradually through the characters, plot, and dialogue. It requires readers to infer and interpret the underlying messages and meanings of the work.
"The questions were revealed before the examination." "She revealed the truth about her to him yesterday." "His scar was revealed yesterday because of the hole in his shirt."
