The long-term effects of World War II have been many and varied. The most important of these, however, was the rise of the United States as the world's great super-power (a status which it can still be said to hold today), along with a rival for that position in the U.S.S.R. This rivalry played out in the Cold War that dominated the latter half of the 20th century, defining geo-political affairs for several generations and maintaining an ever-present threat of nuclear destruction.
