Whitney won a contract from the federal government for the production of 10,000 military muskets. The key to his winning bid was the development of a reliable process for manufacturing interchangeable firing mechanism parts. The standardization of interchangeable parts was a major contribution to the development of American industry. He didn't invent the idea; he made it popular in the U.S.

Also Whitney devised a cotton gin (short for engine), which mechanically separated seed from fiber. This improvement altered the Southern economy. But that didn't contribute to the manufacturing process.

Why was the technology of Interchangeable parts so revolutionary to the Industrial Revolution?

The technology of interchangeable parts allowed manufacturing of objects in such a way that when one piece broke, the entire object was not worthless. The broken piece could be switched out with a functioning duplicate, and the object would again be useful. If interchangeable parts had not been used to make the object, fixing it would have been either a custom job, making it expensive, or out of the question.
